Emission Reduction Targets Approved by Science Based Target Initiative

At Takeda, we are a science-driven organization. The commitments we make for patients worldwide — and for our planet — are rooted in science-based targets that are aimed to provide impactful value for the communities we aim to serve.

Takeda has received approval by the Science Based Targets initiative* (SBTi) for its emission reduction targets. The approval from SBTi recognizes the targets as being science-based and consistent with reductions required to limit the rise in global temperature to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

To deliver on these targets Takeda aims to:

  • Reduce energy consumption through conservation and efficiency measures;
  • Invest in renewable energy to decarbonize operations; and
  • Work with suppliers to help them reduce their own climate impacts.

“Takeda has actively engaged in environmental initiatives for almost 50 years, and we are proud that our emissions reductions targets are in line with climate science, so that we can continue to build on the environmental progress we have made,” said Thomas Wozniewski, Global Manufacturing and Supply Officer, Takeda. “I am very excited that we delivered on our commitment to becoming carbon neutral across our value chain in already in 2020 through the use of renewable energy and verified carbon offsets, and we aim to becoming carbon zero by 2040 in our own operations by reducing our company-wide emissions down to zero.”

Recognizing Climate Change Risks

“Recognizing that climate change poses risks to human health and the well documented link between climate change and public health including the spread of infectious diseases, led Takeda to make environmental efforts a business priority,” says Deborah Donovan, Global Head of Corporate Environment, Health and Safety, Takeda. “As a leading global healthcare company, taking responsibility for the environment is aligned with our values and motivates us to act urgently on reducing our impact on the planet.”

The Science Based Targets initiative is a collaboration between Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), and champions science-based target setting as a powerful way to transition to a low-carbon economy.
